Protean Career

Douglas T. Hall 1976

In the past decade we have seen tremendous change in the job market and related career options, career planning and management. The world of work has become more unstable for workers in a globlised, fickle market place. These developments have been exacerbated by economic uncertainty and changes in technology, in particular in the development of the web and related technologies.  Linked to the concept of the Protean Career, there have been significant changes between the ‘psychological contract’ between organisation/employer and individual/employee. Protean Career then and now; organisation and individual loyalty versus offer of opportunities and commitment to high performance.

These changes in the psychological contract have lead to an increasing change in how individuals manage and see their careers or jobs. There has been increasing individualisation away from the organisation or employer.Hall's traditional versus protean career model.
